My Thoughts On Sales

Not something to fear

The other day, someone asked me why I went into sales and marketing after a long career being a CPA.

I noticed that a lot of people have limiting beliefs and negative connotations around sales.

This is how I would break down the sales skillset:

  • Knowing how to talk to people

  • Persuade them your way of thinking

  • Convince them to write you a check

  • Nurturing and maintaining the relationship

All of the world’s highest paid people and people in positions of power know how do these things exceptionally well:

  • Emotional intelligence and understanding people

  • Being a good listener

  • Communicate with logic, facts, and emotion, as needed

  • Storytelling

  • Non-verbal communication

  • Tonality

Depending on the industry and the end outcome you’re going for, the application may be different.

  • Plastic surgeon has to use bedside manner when talking to a patient

  • Accountants have to explain financial concepts clearly when talking to clients

  • CFOs have to craft a compelling story with quantitative facts when talking to analysts and investors

  • Marketers have to convince clients they can help them make money

Sales is just communicating to convince.
